Travel to Greece
Greece combines the mountainous mainland of the southern Balkans with thousands of islands and a heritage spanning antiquity, Byzantine churches and historic towns. Athens is crowned by the Acropolis and the Parthenon. Delphi, Olympia and the cliff-top monasteries of Meteora reveal other layers of its history.
The Peloponnese combines archaeological sites, fortified towns and coastlines. Further north, Thessaloniki, the stone villages of Zagori and the mountains of Olympus broaden the picture. The Cyclades, including Santorini and Mykonos, are known for white villages above blue seas. Crete, Rhodes, Corfu and the other island groups each have their own landscapes and traditions. Ferries connect many islands. Regional food, tavernas and local festivals bring visitors into contact with everyday Greek life.
The Ionian Islands add greener hills and Venetian influences, while the Dodecanese combine medieval harbours with eastern Aegean traditions. The Sporades offer wooded coastlines, and the Saronic Islands allow shorter island stays near Athens. Northern Aegean islands have their own farming, craft and maritime histories. Mainland mountain villages, walking routes and lakes provide alternatives to beach holidays. Olive oil, cheeses, seasonal vegetables and seafood vary between regions rather than forming one uniform island menu.
Spring and autumn often suit archaeological visits and lower walks, while summer brings heat and busier coasts. Sea conditions and seasonal connections influence island routes. Buses serve many mainland towns, but mountain villages and dispersed sites can require additional transport.
