Description
Nafplio (Ναύπλιο) is one of the Peloponnese’s most beautiful historic cities and served as the first capital of the modern Greek state from 1827 to 1834. The city is known for its picturesque Old Town with Venetian and neoclassical buildings, narrow streets, elegant squares, and historic harbor. Rising above the city are the imposing Palamidi Fortress and the older Akronafplia Fortress, while the island fortress of Bourtzi once guarded the harbor entrance. Nafplio combines Venetian and Ottoman heritage with Greek history and Mediterranean charm. The city is also an ideal base for exploring the ancient sites of Mycenae and Epidaurus and is one of the Peloponnese’s most appealing destinations.
