Corfu (Κέρκυρα) lies in the northern Ionian Sea off the coasts of Epirus and Albania. Venetian rule, followed by French and British administration, gave it a character unlike any other Greek island. Corfiot cuisine shows its Venetian heritage in dishes such as pastitsada and sofrito, and kumquats are made into liqueur and sweets. Corfu has an international airport and ferries to Igoumenitsa and to Italian ports. Boat trips go to Paxos and Antipaxos and to Saranda and Butrint in Albania.
