Description
The Pelion Peninsula (Πήλιο) is a forested mountain region in Thessaly that combines spectacular nature with Greek mythology, traditional architecture, and a diverse Mediterranean coastline. The region is said to be the home of the wise centaur Chiron and is known for its picturesque mountain villages, slate roofed mansions, historic cobbled kalderimia, and dense chestnut and beech forests. Villages such as Makrinitsa, Milies, and Tsagarada preserve their traditional character, while the historic Pelion railway winds through the mountains. Numerous coves and beaches line both the Aegean coast and the Pagasetic Gulf. Hiking trails, seaside resorts, and a small ski area make Pelion one of mainland Greece’s most diverse destinations.
