Lefkada (Λευκάδα) is an island in the Ionian Sea, joined to the mainland by a causeway and a floating swing bridge across a narrow canal. This makes it reachable by car, and Aktion airport near Preveza lies close by. The mountainous interior rises to 1,182 metres at Mount Elati. In the west, the land falls away in dramatic white cliffs.
Beaches such as Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma lie below these cliffs, with turquoise water. In the far south, Cape Lefkatas with its lighthouse is linked in legend with the poet Sappho. Lefkada Town has narrow lanes and houses with light timber-framed upper floors built to withstand earthquakes. The Venetian castle of Santa Maura guards the entrance to the island. Nydri faces the islands of Skorpios and Meganisi. Vasiliki Bay in the south is known for windsurfing.
Mountain villages such as Karya, Eglouvi and Sivros keep traditions of embroidery, lentil growing and wine. Faneromeni Monastery overlooks the town. Sailing, kayaking and boat trips to Meganisi, Kefalonia and Ithaca are part of island life in summer. Tavernas serve local salami, lentils and fresh fish.
