Milos

Milos (Μήλος) is a volcanic island in the southwestern Cyclades, wrapped around one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean. Obsidian from Milos was traded across the Aegean in prehistoric times, and mining continues on the island. The coast counts some seventy beaches and coves in colours from white to red.

Sarakiniko is a bay of smooth white volcanic rock. Firiplaka and Tsigrado lie below coloured cliffs, and Paleochori is known for its warm volcanic seabed. On the southwest coast the sea caves and rock arches of Kleftiko are reached by boat. The hilltop village of Plaka, capital of the island, is topped by the ruins of a Venetian castle. Below it lie the early Christian catacombs, the ancient theatre and the spot where the Venus de Milo was found. In fishing villages such as Klima and Firopotamos, colourful syrmata boathouses sit right at the water. In the north lie Pollonia and the caves of Papafragas, near the Bronze Age site of Phylakopi. The port of Adamas is the main base, with the Mining Museum and ferry links. Milos also has a small airport.
