Description

Elounda (Ελούντα) is one of the best known coastal destinations in eastern Crete, combining Mediterranean landscapes with upscale tourism, history, and archaeological heritage. The sheltered Gulf of Elounda is shaped by picturesque bays, small islands, and elegant resorts, facing the historic fortified island of Spinalonga. Its Venetian fortress, built in the 16th century, and surviving buildings reflect the island’s complex history, including its role as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957. Offshore lie the partially submerged remains of ancient Olous. Nearby Agios Nikolaos is centered around Lake Voulismeni, which is connected to the sea by a narrow canal. Elounda brings together coastal scenery, culture, and history in eastern Crete.
