Description
Olympia (Ολυμπία) lies in the western Peloponnese and ranks among the most important sanctuaries of the ancient Greek world. Set in the lush river landscape where the Alpheios and Kladeos meet, it developed into a major center of the cult of Zeus and the birthplace of the Olympic Games, held here every four years from 776 BC. The ruins of the Altis, the Temple of Zeus, the Temple of Hera and the ancient stadium reflect its former importance. Olympia brings together myth, religion, art and sport and remains a powerful symbol of peaceful competition and the shared cultural heritage of the Greek world.
