Description
Patmos (Πάτμος) is a historic island in the Dodecanese and an important center of Greek Orthodox Christianity. The island is closely associated with the Apostle and Evangelist John, who, according to tradition, received the visions recorded in the Book of Revelation here. The Cave of the Apocalypse, the fortified Monastery of Saint John the Theologian and the historic Chora together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Patmos is known for its whitewashed houses, narrow streets, churches and chapels, as well as its distinctive Aegean architecture. The island combines religious heritage, medieval history and an unspoiled landscape of secluded bays and beaches, making it one of the Dodecanese’s most distinctive islands.
