Monemvasia (Μονεμβασιά) is a striking medieval fortress town built on a massive rock on the southeastern coast of the Peloponnese and is often called the “Gibraltar of the East.” Founded in Byzantine times, the historic town is known for its imposing walls, narrow cobbled streets, stone houses, historic churches and leafy courtyards. Above the inhabited lower town lies the largely deserted upper town, with Byzantine ruins and the remarkable Church of Agia Sophia. Monemvasia combines medieval architecture, Byzantine heritage and a spectacular setting above the sea, making it one of the most impressive historic destinations in Greece.
