Description
Delphi (Δελφοί) was one of the most important sanctuaries of the ancient Greek world and a major center of religion, mythology, and culture. Set on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, the site was regarded in antiquity as the “navel of the earth” and was renowned for the Oracle of Apollo, whose priestess Pythia delivered prophecies to rulers, delegations, and pilgrims. Delphi is known for the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, its theater, stadium, and Sacred Way lined with treasuries and offerings. The Pythian Games also made Delphi a center of athletic and cultural competition. Surrounded by a spectacular mountain landscape, Delphi remains one of Greece’s most fascinating ancient sites.
