Corinth
Greece · Peloponnese · 90 m
Description
Corinth (Κόρινθος) lies on the strategically important Isthmus between the Peloponnese and mainland Greece and has owed much of its economic importance to this location since antiquity. The city grew wealthy through trade, seafaring and traffic across the isthmus, becoming a major commercial center of the Greek and Roman worlds. The ruins of ancient Corinth lie beneath Acrocorinth, a formidable 574 meter high rock fortress. Seven columns of the Temple of Apollo still rise above the Agora, while the Bema is associated with the Apostle Paul. Nearby, the Corinth Canal cuts through the isthmus for 6.3 kilometers, linking the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf since 1893.
