Meteora (Μετέωρα) is a spectacular monastic landscape in Thessaly and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. Towering sandstone cliffs rise above the Thessalian Plain, creating an extraordinary setting for six centuries old Eastern Orthodox monasteries. Monks and hermits have lived here since the 11th century, and Meteora became an important center of Orthodox spirituality during the Middle Ages. The monasteries are renowned for their remarkable architecture, intricate frescoes and precious icons. Meteora uniquely combines dramatic natural scenery with religious tradition, Byzantine art and centuries of history.
