Description
Kavala (Καβάλα) is a historic port city in northern Greece that combines Ottoman heritage, Mediterranean character, and the landscapes of the Aegean. The old town of Panagia stretches across a rocky peninsula beneath the Byzantine fortress, while the monumental Kamares aqueduct, extending 270 meters, remains one of the city’s defining landmarks. The Imaret, with its distinctive domes, recalls Muhammad Ali, who was born in Kavala and later became ruler of Egypt. The city grew wealthy through the tobacco trade, whose historic warehouses still shape parts of the waterfront. Kavala is also an important gateway to Thassos and the ancient UNESCO World Heritage Site of Philippi.
