Rhodes (Ρόδος) is the largest island of the Dodecanese. In antiquity it was a powerful sea state, famous for the Colossus, which is said to have stood by the harbour. In the Middle Ages the Knights of St John ruled from here, and the Medieval City of Rhodes is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Inside its mighty walls lie the Street of the Knights, the Palace of the Grand Master and the Archaeological Museum. Ottoman mosques such as the Suleymaniye and the Kahal Shalom Synagogue stand nearby. Mandraki Harbour and the Fortress of Saint Nicholas mark the waterfront of the new town, with Elli Beach nearby. On the east coast, the whitewashed village of Lindos lies below its acropolis with the Temple of Athena Lindia. Tsambika, Ladiko, Agathi and Anthony Quinn Bay are beaches on this side. On the west coast stand Ancient Kamiros and Monolithos Castle. Prasonisi at the southern tip draws windsurfers and kitesurfers. Inland are Filerimos Hill, the Seven Springs and the Valley of the Butterflies, where Jersey tiger moths gather in summer.
The hill villages around Embonas grow wine. Rhodes has an international airport and ferry links, with day trips to Symi and Halki.
