Description
Thassos (Θάσος) is the northernmost major Greek island in the Aegean Sea, known for its lush forests, white marble quarries and turquoise coves. Often called the Emerald Isle, it combines pine covered mountains, olive groves and traditional villages with a rich ancient heritage. Thassos was renowned for its high quality marble, which was quarried and exported across the Mediterranean in antiquity. At Aliki, striking ancient marble quarries descend toward the sea beside the remains of early Christian basilicas. Limenas, the island’s main port, stands alongside the ancient city of Thasos, where the Agora, theater and Acropolis offer glimpses into its prosperous past.
