Description
Mystras (Μυστράς) is an extraordinary late Byzantine fortified town on the slopes of Mount Taygetos above Sparta in the Peloponnese. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for its medieval castle, massive fortifications, palaces, churches and monasteries adorned with remarkable frescoes. As the seat of the Despotate of the Morea, Mystras became an important political, intellectual and cultural center of the Byzantine world during the 14th and 15th centuries. Scholars such as Georgios Gemistos Plethon shaped its intellectual legacy. In 1449, Constantine XI Palaiologos was crowned emperor here, becoming the last emperor of the Byzantine Empire. Today, Mystras uniquely combines history, art and dramatic mountain scenery.
