Description
Epidaurus (Επίδαυρος) is one of the most important sites of ancient Greece and was the foremost healing center of Asclepius, the god of medicine. The extensive sanctuary in the Peloponnese brought together temples, a circular Tholos, the Enkoimeterion, a stadium, and other facilities for healing, worship, and visitors. It is especially famous for its 4th century BC theater, a masterpiece of Greek architecture renowned for its harmonious proportions and exceptional acoustics. Inscriptions describing miraculous cures provide insight into ancient beliefs about illness and healing. The sanctuary has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988 and remains an important venue for performances of ancient drama.
