Short description of Epidaurus
Epidaurus (Επίδαυρος) in the Argolis was the most celebrated healing sanctuary of the ancient Greek world. It was dedicated to Asclepius, the god of medicine, and drew the sick from across Greece and later the Roman world. The Sanctuary of Asclepius is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and lies in a green valley inland from the Saronic coast.
Its best-known monument is the theatre of the 4th century BC, set into a hillside and famed for its harmonious proportions and remarkable acoustics. Below it lie the remains of the Temple of Asclepius, the circular Tholos and the Enkoimeterion, where patients slept in hope of a healing dream. The stadium, the Propylaia and the large Katagogion guest house complete the picture. Inscribed tablets in the site museum record miraculous cures and offer insight into ancient ideas of illness and healing.
In summer the theatre hosts ancient drama as part of the Athens Epidaurus Festival. The nearby harbour village of Palaia Epidavros has its own Little Theatre and the remains of a sunken ancient town just offshore. The site is an easy trip from Nafplio and is often combined with Mycenae.
