Description
Symi (Σύμη) is a picturesque island in the Dodecanese in the southeastern Aegean, close to the Turkish coast, and is known for its colorful harbor, neoclassical houses, and rich maritime heritage. Elegant mansions in shades of pink, ochre, blue, and yellow line the hills around Gialos and recall the island’s prosperous 19th century, when shipbuilding, trade, and sponge diving brought considerable wealth. Above the harbor lies Chorio, with traditional houses and the historic Kali Strata staircase. The Monastery of Panormitis, secluded coves, and a rugged Mediterranean landscape add to the island’s distinctive character and timeless Aegean atmosphere.
