Symi

Symi (Σύμη) is a small, rocky island in the Dodecanese, lying close to the Turkish coast north of Rhodes. In the 19th century shipbuilding, trade and sponge diving made it wealthy. That prosperity left a remarkable legacy of neoclassical mansions in ochre, pink, blue and yellow, stacked up the hills around the harbour.

The harbour town of Gialos, with its clock tower and Maritime Museum, is the heart of the island. The Kali Strata, a long stone stairway, climbs to the upper town of Chorio and its Archaeological and Folklore Museum. Above stand the ruins of the Kastro, a castle of the Knights of Saint John. In the south lies the Monastery of Panormitis, a major place of pilgrimage. Water taxis serve secluded coves such as Nanou, Marathounda and Agios Georgios Dysalona. Hiking trails cross the bare interior, and boat trips visit the islet of Seskli. Sponges are still sold along the quay, and tiny fried Symi shrimp are the local specialty. Symi has no airport and is reached by ferry or excursion boat, mostly from Rhodes.
