Folegandros

Folegandros (Φολέγανδρος) is a small, rocky island in the southwestern Cyclades, between Milos and Santorini. It has no airport and is reached by ferry at the little port of Karavostasis. The rugged landscape of steep cliffs, dry-stone terraces and quiet coves keeps a traditional character.

Chora sits on the edge of a cliff about 200 metres above the sea. Its heart is the Kastro, a medieval quarter built under Venetian rule whose houses form a defensive wall. Around it, shaded squares, narrow lanes and chapels hold most of the island's tavernas, cafés and bars. A zigzag path leads up to the church of Panagia on the hill above town. In the north, the scattered farmsteads of Ano Meria keep rural life alive, with a small folklore museum. Footpaths reach beaches such as Agkali, Livadaki and Agios Georgios, while Katergo is reached by boat or on foot. The sea cave of Chrysospilia lies in the cliffs below Chora. Show more

The island is known for walking, simple food and a calm pace. Local specialities include matsata, a handmade pasta, and the cheese pie kalasouna.
