Description
Rethymno (Ρέθυμνο) is one of Crete’s most characterful cities, combining Venetian heritage, Ottoman influences, and relaxed Mediterranean life. The city is known for its historic old town with narrow streets, Venetian houses, wooden balconies, fountains, and minarets, as well as the imposing Fortezza overlooking the city. The Venetian harbor and its historic lighthouse add to Rethymno’s distinctive character, while traditional tavernas, cafés, and the presence of the University of Crete create a lively atmosphere. A long sandy beach stretches east of the old town, allowing Rethymno to combine history and culture with authentic Cretan life and easy days by the sea.
