Athens

Athens (Αθήνα) is the capital of Greece and the country's political, economic and cultural heart. In the 5th century BC the city was the birthplace of democracy, drama and philosophy.

Above everything rises the Acropolis with the Parthenon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Acropolis Museum lies at its foot. Nearby lie the Ancient Agora with the Temple of Hephaestus, the Roman Agora and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. The old quarter of Plaka and the island-like lanes of Anafiotika cling to the hill. Everyday Athens lives in its squares, markets and neighbourhoods. The flea market of Monastiraki, the Central Market and the street art and bars of Psyrri and Gazi set the tone. Souvlaki, koulouri and shared meze are part of the city's food culture. The coast of the Athens Riviera lies close by. With its airport and the port of Piraeus, Athens is the main gateway to the islands. It is also a base for day trips to Cape Sounion, Delphi and Aegina.
