Description
Vergina (Βεργίνα) is one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites and stands on the site of ancient Aigai, the first capital of the Macedonian kingdom. The site became world famous for its royal tombs, including the unplundered tomb identified as that of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. The underground museum preserves the tombs and their extraordinary treasures, including golden larnakes, precious jewelry, weapons, armor, and the famous golden oak wreath. The archaeological complex also includes the monumental palace, ancient theater, and royal necropolis. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Vergina is a remarkable testament to ancient Macedonian history and culture.
