Travel to Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka combines ancient cities, tea highlands, wildlife and tropical coasts on an island in the Indian Ocean. The Cultural Triangle holds Sigiriya's rock fortress, Dambulla's cave temples and the old capitals of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.
Kandy preserves the Temple of the Tooth, while rail journeys through the highlands pass tea plantations towards Ella. Horton Plains and Sinharaja add highland grasslands and rainforest. Yala is known for leopards and Udawalawe for elephants. Galle's fort, surf beaches and seasonal whale watching draw visitors south. Trincomalee and Pasikuda reveal the east coast, while Jaffna offers insights into Tamil culture in the north. Rice and curry, hoppers, spices and tea connect the country's varied culinary traditions.
Colombo adds museums, neighbourhood markets and a busy waterfront to the island's cultural picture. Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian traditions shape religious sites, festivals and everyday life in different regions. Visits to tea estates, village workshops and food markets complement the main monuments. Modest clothing and local etiquette matter at places of worship. The southwest and northeast monsoons influence opposite coasts differently, so there is no single beach season for the whole island.
Highland weather can be cool and wet even when the coast is hot. Wildlife sightings depend on conditions and are never guaranteed. Rail and bus routes connect many towns, but mountain journeys, park visits and remote coastal stops need realistic travel times and onward transport.

Climate and best time to travel
Sri Lanka has a tropical climate shaped by the southwest and northeast monsoons. The sea along the south and west coasts is generally calmer from November to April, while the east coast is at its best from May to September. The central highlands are considerably cooler and are often drier from January to April. Short, heavy showers are possible throughout the year. The best time to travel therefore varies significantly by coast, region and altitude.
