Description
Minneriya National Park (මිනේරිය) in Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle is particularly famous for the large gatherings of Asian elephants known as “The Gathering”. The landscape is shaped by open grasslands, dry zone forests and wetlands surrounding the historic Minneriya Reservoir, which was constructed in the 3rd century under King Mahasena. During the dry season, large numbers of elephants gather around the receding waters of the reservoir in search of food and water. Alongside elephants, the park is home to deer, monkeys, crocodiles and a diverse range of bird species. Its open landscapes and wildlife rich wetlands make Minneriya an important safari destination and a striking example of the connection between nature and Sri Lanka’s ancient irrigation heritage.
