Description
Kitulgala (කිතුල්ගල) is a small town on the Kelani River in Sri Lanka’s wet lowland rainforest and is known for white-water rafting, outdoor adventures and nature experiences. The river’s rapids offer different levels of difficulty, making Kitulgala a popular destination for rafting and canyoning. Dense forests, waterfalls and diverse landscapes provide opportunities for hiking and birdwatching, while the nearby Makandawa Forest Reserve is known for its rich wildlife, including endemic species. Kitulgala also became famous as a filming location for David Lean’s “The Bridge on the River Kwai”, whose iconic bridge scene was filmed here. The nearby Belilena Cave offers insights into Sri Lanka’s early human history.
