Anuradhapura (අනුරාධපුරය) is one of Sri Lanka’s oldest royal cities and one of the country’s most important historical and spiritual centres. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is renowned for monumental stupas such as Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya, extensive monastic complexes, ancient reservoirs and the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi, regarded as the oldest historically documented living tree in the world. Anuradhapura combines remarkable remains of more than two thousand years of history with a living Buddhist tradition that continues to shape the city. Surrounded by ancient ruins, stupas and lush vegetation, the expansive historic site offers a fascinating insight into Sri Lanka’s ancient civilisation and religious heritage.
