Description
Sigiriya (සීගිරිය), the famous “Lion Rock” in Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, is one of the country’s most important archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The dramatic rock rises around 180 metres above the surrounding plain and is crowned by the remains of a royal complex built in the 5th century under King Kashyapa I. Sigiriya is renowned for its colourful frescoes known as the “Cloud Maidens”, the historic Mirror Wall with centuries old graffiti, the monumental Lion’s Paws and the carefully designed water and rock gardens. Its remarkable combination of royal architecture, sophisticated water engineering and landscape design makes Sigiriya one of Sri Lanka’s most impressive cultural landmarks.
