Jaffna
Sri Lanka · Northern Province
Description
Jaffna (யாழ்ப்பாணம்) is the cultural centre of Sri Lanka’s Tamil dominated north and is known for its distinctive Tamil identity, religious traditions and historic connections with South India. Among its most important attractions are the colourful Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, historic Jaffna Fort and the landmark Jaffna Public Library. The region’s cuisine, shaped by Tamil and South Indian influences, is also an important part of the city’s cultural character. Offshore islands such as Delft are known for coral stone walls, colonial remains and free roaming horses. Jaffna brings together Tamil heritage, colonial history and the distinctive landscape of the dry peninsula, offering a different perspective on Sri Lanka.
