Bhutan is a small Himalayan kingdom between India and China, known for measuring its success by Gross National Happiness and for protecting its culture and forests. Its fortress monasteries, the dzongs, dominate the valleys of Paro, Thimphu and Punakha, and the Tiger's Nest monastery clings to a cliff high above Paro.
Colourful masked dance festivals, the tsechus, are held in the monasteries through the year. Visitors pay a daily sustainable development fee and usually travel with a licensed guide, which keeps numbers low. Paro has the main international airport.
