Trincomalee (திருகோணமலை) is a historic port city on Sri Lanka’s northeastern coast, known for its expansive natural harbour, one of the most significant deep-water ports in South Asia. The city combines Tamil culture and colonial history with Hindu temples and long sandy beaches. Key attractions include the Koneswaram Temple, perched high above the sea, historic Fort Frederick and the beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli. Offshore, Pigeon Island National Park is known for its coral reefs and diverse marine life. The waters around Trincomalee also offer opportunities to encounter whales and dolphins.
