Colombo

Colombo (කොළඹ) is Sri Lanka's largest city and its commercial centre, spread along the Indian Ocean on the island's west coast. Its streets mix colonial buildings, Buddhist and Hindu temples, mosques, churches, busy markets and modern towers, reflecting a long history as a trading port.

The historic Fort district keeps colonial landmarks such as the restored Dutch Hospital, while the bazaar streets of Pettah are full of spices, textiles and the striking red and white Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque. Gangaramaya Temple and the Seema Malaka on Beira Lake show Buddhist art and architecture, and the National Museum presents the island's history. The Lotus Tower offers wide views over the city. At sunset, families gather on Galle Face Green, a seaside promenade with kites and street food stalls. Colombo's food scene ranges from hoppers and kottu to seafood and international cuisine, and Mount Lavinia Beach lies a short ride south. The Kelaniya temple and Viharamahadevi Park add quieter corners.

Most international flights land at Bandaranaike Airport north of the city, and trains run from Colombo along the coast and into the hills. One or two days suit a first look. The west coast is driest from December to April, while the city can be visited all year.
