Description
Ratnapura (රත්නපුර) means “City of Gems” and is Sri Lanka’s most important centre for gemstone mining and trading. The alluvial deposits of rivers and streams around the city are particularly rich in sapphires, while rubies, cat’s eyes and other gemstones are also found. Traditional mining is still carried out in many places using hand-dug shafts and pits. The Maha Saman Devale, a historic shrine dedicated to the god Saman, is one of the region’s most important religious sites. The National Museum offers insights into the history of gemstone mining. Nearby attractions include Bopath Ella waterfall and the pilgrimage routes to the sacred Sri Pada.
