Description
Kataragama (කතරගම) in Sri Lanka’s dry southeastern region is one of the island’s most important pilgrimage sites and a centre of multireligious worship. The Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya is dedicated to Kataragama Deviyo, who is associated with Skanda and Murugan in Hindu tradition. Nearby, the Buddhist Kiri Vehera is regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s sixteen most sacred pilgrimage sites. Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and the indigenous Vedda community revere this sacred area. The Menik Ganga plays an important role in traditional pilgrimage rituals. During the Esala Festival, colourful processions and religious ceremonies fill the town with activity. Kataragama brings together spiritual traditions, cultural diversity and centuries of pilgrimage heritage.
