Description
Gal Oya National Park (ගල් ඔය) in eastern Sri Lanka was established in 1954 to protect the catchment area of Senanayake Samudraya, the country’s largest reservoir. The vast lake shapes the landscape with numerous forested islands and provides opportunities for boat safaris, where crocodiles, water buffalo and a variety of bird species can be observed. With some luck, elephants can also be seen swimming or along the shores. Jeep safaris and guided walks explore the park’s forests and grasslands. Members of the indigenous Vedda community also offer insights into the region’s traditional culture and knowledge of the natural environment. Gal Oya combines diverse wildlife, pristine landscapes and a distinctive connection to Sri Lanka’s indigenous heritage.
