Weligama (වැලිගම) is a lively coastal town on Sri Lanka’s southern coast, known for its wide, sheltered bay and long sandy beach. Gentle waves and a sandy seabed make it one of the island’s most popular surfing destinations for beginners. Surf schools, cafés and restaurants add a relaxed atmosphere, while fishing boats and traditional stilt fishing reflect the area’s coastal heritage. Just offshore, Taprobane Island is home to a historic villa surrounded by tropical gardens. Nearby Kushtarajagala is an ancient rock-cut figure associated with Mahayana Buddhist tradition.
