Nuwara Eliya (නුවර එළිය) lies at around 1,870 metres in Sri Lanka’s central highlands and is the centre of an important tea-growing region. Known as “Little England”, the mountain town is characterised by its cool climate, colonial-era architecture, manicured gardens and extensive tea plantations. Well-known attractions include Gregory Lake, Victoria Park and the Hakgala Botanical Garden. Nuwara Eliya is also an important base for exploring Horton Plains National Park, with its misty forests, montane grasslands, Baker’s Falls and the dramatic viewpoint at World’s End. The town combines colonial heritage, tea culture and the distinctive mountain landscape of Sri Lanka’s central highlands.
