Travel to Indonesia
Indonesia stretches across more than seventeen thousand islands between the Indian and Pacific oceans, with diverse cultures, volcanic landscapes and tropical seas. Bali combines temples, rice terraces and beaches. Java adds the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan, Yogyakarta's cultural life and the volcanoes of Bromo and Ijen.
Sumatra and Indonesian Borneo shelter orangutans in rainforest habitats. Sulawesi brings the traditions and distinctive houses of Tana Toraja together with marine parks around Bunaken and Wakatobi. Lombok, the Gili Islands and Flores offer beaches, mountain trails and island journeys. Komodo National Park is home to Komodo dragons, while Raja Ampat is known for diverse coral reefs. Regional cuisines, crafts and religious traditions vary across the country.
Domestic flights and ferries connect the island groups. Lake Toba adds volcanic highlands and Batak heritage to Sumatra, while waterways and forest communities reveal other perspectives on Kalimantan. Markets, textiles, music and local celebrations show cultural differences beyond the major temples. Rice dishes, satay, sambal and seafood are prepared differently across the archipelago. Island journeys need a geographical focus rather than an attempt to cover the country in one short trip.
Rainfall patterns vary between islands, and sea conditions can affect crossings outside the wettest months too. Volcano visits depend on local alerts, route conditions and access rules. Wildlife experiences should keep a respectful distance and support responsible operators. Road, ferry and flight connections often require time buffers, particularly for remote regions and multi-island routes.

Climate and best time to travel
Indonesia has a warm tropical climate throughout the year. Rather than four seasons, rainfall is shaped by wet and dry periods. Across much of the country, including Java and Bali, the drier travel season generally runs from April to October, while heavier rain is more frequent from November to March. Conditions can vary considerably across the vast archipelago.
