Description
Bedugul is a cool volcanic highland around Lake Bratan in central Bali, a welcome change from the coastal heat at nearly a thousand metres. Its landmark is Ulun Danu Beratan, a Hindu water temple from the seventeenth century whose multi-tiered black-thatched shrines appear to float on the lake, an image reproduced on Indonesia's fifty-thousand-rupiah note. Boats and colourful swan pedal-boats cross the water in front of it. Just uphill, the Bali Botanic Garden spreads across more than a hundred hectares of highland forest, home to thousands of plant species including an orchid collection and a treetop canopy walk. Strawberry farms and candlelit night markets fill the surrounding hills.
