Description
Mount Ijen (Gunung Ijen) is an active volcano in eastern Java, Indonesia, and ranks among Southeast Asia’s most extraordinary natural wonders. It is renowned for its turquoise crater lake, one of the world’s largest highly acidic crater lakes, and for its famous “Blue Flames”, visible at night and created by burning sulfur-rich gases. The hike to the crater rim leads through cool mountain scenery and rewards visitors with breathtaking views of this spectacular volcanic landscape. At the same time, traditional sulfur mining remains an integral part of life at Ijen. Miners carry heavy baskets of sulfur from the crater, offering a glimpse into one of Indonesia’s most physically demanding occupations. Mount Ijen uniquely combines spectacular scenery, geological extremes, and living tradition, making it one of the country’s most remarkable volcanic destinations.
