Pura Besakih, Bali's Mother Temple, is the island's largest and holiest Hindu sanctuary, spread across the southwestern slope of Mount Agung at around a thousand metres. More than twenty separate temple complexes cluster around the central Pura Penataran Agung, their multi-tiered meru towers stepping up the hillside in stone courtyards over a thousand years old. Every Balinese temple traces a spiritual connection back to Besakih, and the complex hosts frequent ceremonies drawing worshippers from across the island. Visitors explore the terraced courtyards on foot, guided past shrines dedicated to the Hindu trinity, with Mount Agung rising directly behind the temple roofs. A local guide is customary, and modest dress is required throughout.
