Samosir (Pulau Samosir) is the large island at the heart of Lake Toba and the cultural center of the Toba Batak people in the highlands of North Sumatra. The island is known for its traditional Batak villages with distinctive houses and sweeping roofs, ancient stone tombs and stone chairs, as well as its vibrant culture of music, dance, and intricately woven ulos textiles. Samosir combines centuries-old traditions with a spectacular volcanic landscape of green hills, steep caldera walls, and sweeping views across the lake. Swimming, hiking, cycling, and scooter trips make the island a relaxed destination and one of the most fascinating places around Lake Toba.
