Description
Mount Kelimutu (Gunung Kelimutu) is the best known natural attraction on Flores and one of Indonesia's most fascinating volcanoes. The 1,639 metre volcano is famous for its three crater lakes, Tiwu Ata Bupu, Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai and Tiwu Ata Polo, whose colours change continuously through natural volcanic and chemical processes, ranging from turquoise and green to red, brown and deep black. Most visitors set out from the mountain village of Moni before sunrise to witness the extraordinary display of colours in the first light of day. Nestled within Kelimutu National Park, the surrounding region is characterised by tropical forests, rice terraces, waterfalls and villages where the traditional art of ikat weaving is still practised. Kelimutu is considered one of Indonesia's most spectacular natural wonders and is a highlight of any journey across Flores.
