Banda Aceh is the historic capital of Aceh Province at the northern tip of Sumatra and an important center of Islamic culture and history in Indonesia. The city is known for the magnificent Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, its traditional markets, distinctive coffee culture, and flavorful Acehnese cuisine. Moving memorials such as the Aceh Tsunami Museum and the PLTD Apung power-generating vessel, swept several kilometers inland by the devastating 2004 tsunami, commemorate the disaster and the resilience of the local population. Banda Aceh combines the heritage of the once-powerful Aceh Sultanate with a vibrant regional culture and serves as the main gateway to Pulau Weh and the tropical islands off northern Sumatra.
