The 17 Islands Marine Park (Taman Wisata Alam Laut Tujuh Belas Pulau) is a protected island paradise off the northern coast of Flores and one of Indonesia's most tranquil marine destinations. Despite its name, the protected area comprises more than seventeen mostly uninhabited islands. The number commemorates Indonesia's Independence Day on 17 August. The archipelago is known for its clear, generally calm waters, vibrant coral reefs, white sand beaches, and extensive mangrove forests. Ontoloe Island is home to a large colony of several thousand flying foxes that emerge in spectacular swarms at dusk, while monitor lizards inhabit some of the islands. Compared with the more heavily visited Komodo National Park, the 17 Islands Marine Park offers a quieter, more unspoiled setting and is considered one of the best places around Flores for snorkeling and island hopping.
