The Baliem Valley (Lembah Baliem) is a remote highland valley in the central mountains of Indonesia's Highland Papua Province and the homeland of the Dani people. The region remained unknown to the Western world until 1938 and is still regarded as one of New Guinea's most remarkable cultural landscapes. The Baliem Valley is renowned for its traditional honai roundhouses, spectacular trekking routes through dramatic mountain scenery, suspension bridges spanning rushing rivers, and the smoked mummies of prominent tribal leaders. Combining breathtaking natural beauty with the living traditions of the highland peoples, the Baliem Valley is considered one of Papua's most fascinating destinations.
