Gunung Leuser National Park (Taman Nasional Gunung Leuser) is one of Southeast Asia's most important rainforest conservation areas and protects one of the last places on Earth where Sumatran orangutans, tigers, rhinos, and elephants still share the same natural habitat. Covering around 8,600 square kilometers across the provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra, the park forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra. It is renowned for its pristine rainforests, exceptional biodiversity, and remote jungle trekking routes. The Ketambe area is considered one of the best places to observe truly wild orangutans, while the Alas River offers scenic white-water rafting through spectacular rainforest gorges. Dominated by the 3,119-meter-high Mount Leuser, the national park forms the heart of one of Indonesia's largest remaining wilderness areas.
