Oman lies on the southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, a country of rugged mountains, deep wadis and long coasts that has kept much of its traditional character. Muscat, the capital, has the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the Mutrah souq and a waterfront between rocky hills.
Inland, the forts of Nizwa and Bahla, the mountain villages of Jebel Akhdar and the swimming holes of Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid draw visitors. The dunes of the Wahiba Sands, the fjords of Musandam and the monsoon-green hills of Salalah complete the picture.
