Description
Bimmah Sinkhole (هوية نجم or Hawiyat Najm) is a striking karst depression on Oman’s coast and a popular stop on the road between Muscat and Sur. The almost perfectly circular basin is filled with clear, turquoise-green brackish water and was formed by the dissolution of limestone underground, followed by the collapse of the overlying rock. According to local legend, however, a meteorite created the sinkhole, inspiring the name “Falling Star”. A staircase leads from the park above down to the water, where small fish live and swimming is possible. Bimmah Sinkhole combines an unusual natural phenomenon with an easily accessible attraction along Oman’s scenic coastline.
