Description
Sohar (صحار) is a historic port city on Oman’s northern Al Batinah coast and an important center of the country’s maritime heritage. The city is known for its connections to medieval trade with India, East Africa, and China, as well as its historic role in the copper trade. Sohar is also associated with Sindbad the Sailor from One Thousand and One Nights, who local tradition identifies with the city. The imposing Sohar Fort houses a museum exploring the city’s history and maritime importance. Its Corniche, fish market, and traditional souq offer glimpses of local life, while the nearby Hajar Mountains provide scenic wadis and opportunities for exploring the rugged interior.
